Professor Gurung has research interests in the following areas:

(1) Stress and Coping: How are sex differences in stress responding tied to gender, social support, attachment?

(2) Health Behaviors: (a) Can raising awareness of social norms reduce college tobacco use? (b) How can worksite wellness programs be optimized? (c) How early can we change health behaviors?

(3) Clothing, Media, and Health: (a) How do advertisements featuring fit versus thin or realistic looking men/women influence self-esteem, mood, and motivation to exercise and be healthy? (b) How do different types of clothing influence impressions formed of the wearer? For example, can clothing make unhealthy body types more appealing?

(4) Teaching Pedagogy: (a) How can we optimize studying? (e.g., Are there effective pedagogical aids?) (b) How can we best assess what knowledge students bring to class, and how can we use it to enhance their learning and understanding of new material?
